How would you feel if, after going to the dentist for a routine checkup, you ended up with a strange lump on your hand? I bet that would not even the slightest bit okay for you and you would be incredibly scared. However, this is not just a fictional news, this happened to a man in Vancouver.
More details about the event
This weird medical case was published in the New England Journal of Medicine by doctor from UBC, namely George Wharmby and Bashaar K. Alibrahim. The man in question was 27 years old at the time of the event.
He got diagnosed with endocarditis. What is endocarditis? Well, it is an inflammation caused by bacteria that affects the inner lining of the heart. Every 30,000 people get it on a yearly basis in the UK and the US.
The cause of this infection was probably the fact that the man had poor oral hygiene and the dental procedure caused the bacteria to travel. Moreover, after going to the dentist, the man started complaining that he had a red patch on his hand which later on developed into a nasty lump.
Six weeks after he got the dental procedure the man finally checked himself into a hospital. He lost 12 pounds during this period of time and he also suffered from abdominal pains. Doctors found the cause of the infection, the one that we previously stated and he was treated with antibiotics. However, he needed to undergo surgery in order for doctors to treat his damaged aortic valve and replace it.
The moral of this story is that, if you feel that something is wrong with your body at any point, you should always get checked up since, if left alone, the problem can only get worse and worse as time passes.
