By using the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) telescope in the Netherlands, a team formed by about 200 astronomers across 18 countries came up with a new Universe map. The particularity of these new charts of the known Universe is that it revealed over 300,000 never-before-seen galaxies.
Besides, the new Universe map is also shedding more light on some of the Universe’s secrets such as the physics behind black holes and the formation and evolution of galactic clusters, as the scientists reported. Also, they said, the discovery of more than 300,000 new galaxies is a finding with a very significant role for astronomy.
“This is a new window on the universe. When we saw the first images we were like: ‘What is this?!’ It didn’t look anything at all like what we are used to seeing,” said Cyril Tasse from the Paris Observatory, and one of the new study’s authors.
New Universe Map Revealed 300,000 Never-Before-Seen Galaxies
“With radio observations, we can detect radiation from the tenuous medium that exists between galaxies. LOFAR allows us to detect many more of these sources and understand what is powering them,” added Amanda Wilber, of the University of Hamburg, who was also one of the study’s authors.
But the method used to create the new Universe map might prove to be more useful than for just revealing never-before-seen galaxies. The astronomers believe that the technique they used, since it shows new sources of light in the deep Universe, might help astrophysicists learn more about black holes, one of the greatest enigmas of the Universe.
“If you look at an active black hole, the jets of radiation disappear after millions of years, and you won’t see them at a higher frequency of light. But at a lower frequency, they continue to emit these jets for hundreds of millions of years so that we can see far older electrons,” said the researchers in their study.
