Food for hens: feed your chickens well to get beautiful eggs
Want to have good and beautiful eggs? A golden rule: feed your chickens well! Indeed, feeding is the first criterion of laying (outside the seasons of course) and the more the diet is rich, the more egg-laying will be abundant.
Table Scraps are not enough to feed your chickens!
We receive a lot of testimonies from people complaining that their chickens do not lay or lay very little. When one digs to know the causes, it is frequent to observe that the cocottes are satisfied with the remains of the table and the greenery. It is true that chickens are fond of the remains of your leftovers and many communities distribute them to reduce the weight of garbage. These initiatives are very positive because, in addition to alerting citizens to the need to reduce the amount of waste, they provide low – carbon proteins (the eggs!) And raise public awareness of the living conditions of animals, Breeding (when one has chickens, we no longer buy battery eggs!).
However, it is essential to know the food needs of the chickens! Nothing very complicated, everything is in the following formula: we do not catch flies with vinegar! In other words, do not expect to have eggs if your chickens are on water and dry bread!
Hens do not eat all our garbage!
Sort it out before throwing your leftovers to the hens! Some foods will not be affected: citrus peels, banana, melon, mango, watermelon will remain in the trash. For other vegetables, do not hesitate to crush or chop them to facilitate absorption. Observe the chickens when you distribute food and learn to recognize their favorite foods. You are lucky, they are not difficult (some children should take example!).
If possible, limit the sauces. If you have a rest of lasagna, chopped parmesan, dumplings or other dish in sauce, mix with a more compact base such as stale bread, pasta or rice. Then add some greenery.
Remains of cheese can be given if they are well distributed with other foods.
Moderation on red meats! In too much concentration they can make the chickens agitated or even aggressive between them (yes, it is animal protein anyway!).
Fish, Shellfish and Crustaceans: go for it, chickens love it!
You have a little of everything and you do not know what to give your chickens? It falls well, with all this we will prepare the famous pâté!
Chicken Pie: to your aprons!
Who has not heard of the famous chicken pie? Formerly, the farmer gathered the dry bread and all the rest of the table to prepare a feast for the barnyard. You will see, you too will taste it!
When you see your casseroles jumping on them with gluttony, you will enjoy not throwing those leftovers in the trash. And when you taste your first homemade eggs, you will be bluffed! Recycling is important, but most importantly, it’s so good!
Know that there are as many pies of chickens as there are families! The recipe will evolve according to your remains and according to the inspiration of the moment. Always be sure to diversify the contents, if possible using a base of dry bread and / or pasta and / or rice, you will give a good consistency to the pâté.
To start, put the dry bread in the bowl of the chickens and pour water until obtaining a soft dough. Then add your ingredients, making sure to crumble / crush / chop them. Add greens (salad leftovers, radish sprouts and carrots, etc.) at the end.
And here it is (almost ready!) …
The complete blend: an essential food for your chickens!
Special laying mixture, complete feed for layers in pellets or crumbs … You will find in trade a large choice of feed for your chickens. If it’s good eggs (healthy eggs in other words) you want, we highly recommend a BIO blend! Indeed most of the laying foods sold in the trade come from conventional agriculture. This means that residues of pesticides, fungicides and other chemicals massively used in industrial agriculture will end up in your eggs. Any effort to control the contents of your plate would be reduced to nothing … damage not?
After testing the main references distributed in commerce, we recommend the following two brands:
- Organic food in the form of pellets: special food for laying , at TSC.
